Today, we’re excited to take you on a journey to the Nile Delta region of Egypt, where our farm partner Essential Oils of Egypt grows Marjoram. Marjoram is an aromatic herb that has been used for centuries for its medicinal and culinary benefits.

Marjoram

Marjoram, or Origanum majorana, is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean that belongs to the mint family. It is cultivated throughout the world. The plant features small, aromatic leaves and delicate pink or white flowers, which bloom in the summer months. Marjoram has a warming and slightly sweet aroma, with hints of pine and citrus.

In aromatherapy, Marjoram Essential Oil is used to relieve stress, promote relaxation, and soothe muscle aches and pain. The oil also has antispasmodic properties and has been used to treat digestive problems, respiratory issues, and menstrual cramps. It's also very versatile in blends, which makes it a popular choice!

Cultivation

Essential Oils of Egypt, in the Nile Delta region of the country, grows Marjoram using organic farming methods. The farmers start by selecting high-quality seeds, which are sown from September to October. The young plants are then transplanted after four to six weeks into well-prepared soil. The fertile and sandy soil allows for the healthy growth of the plant, which requires a lot of sunshine and a moderate amount of water. The farmers take great care to maintain the health of the Marjoram plants, hand-weeding and hand-watering when necessary. By March, the Marjoram plants are fully grown, and their leaves are ready to be harvested.

Harvesting & Processing

Once the Marjoram leaves are ready to be harvested, the farmers carefully handpick them, taking care not to damage any part of the plant. The freshly harvested leaves are then transported to the distillation facility, where they undergo the steam distillation process. The steam distillation process extracts the essential oil from the Marjoram leaves, which are then separated into two parts: Marjoram Essential Oil and hydrosol (a.k.a floral water). The essential oil is then filtered, bottled, and sent out to the Nature Packaged warehouse!
