Peru Balsam Oil: Sweet, Resinous, and Vanilla-Warm

Peru Balsam Oil comes from the resin of the balsam tree, and it shows up in a blend as a thick, sweet warmth with notes of vanilla, cinnamon, and dried fruit underneath the resin. Where myrrh sits low and smoky, Peru Balsam leans sweeter, closer to amber or a good vanilla absolute, which is why perfumers reach for it as a fixative rather than a headline note. It rounds out sharper or more volatile oils in a blend, stretching their scent life without changing their character.

Where the Sweetness Comes From: The resin itself carries natural vanillin, which is what gives Peru Balsam that dessert-adjacent warmth instead of the drier, more incense-like profile you'd get from Frankincense or Myrrh. That composition also makes it a strong fixative, a small amount slows the evaporation of lighter top notes and helps a fragrance blend hold its shape for longer.

A Note on Formulating With It:Peru Balsam is a known sensitizer for some people, so it's worth keeping usage rates conservative in leave-on skin formulations and patch testing new blends before scaling up a batch.

Elevate Your Creations with Peru Balsam Essential Oil

01

Extend a Fragrance's Staying Power

A small amount of Peru Balsam in a perfume oil or solid perfume slows how fast lighter top notes fade, giving the whole blend more staying power on skin.

02

Add Vanilla-Amber Warmth to Body Care

Peru Balsam's sweet, resinous character rounds out lotion bars, balms, and body oils with a warmth closer to vanilla or amber than to a typical woody or spice note.

03

Round Out Gourmand & Amber-Style Blends

Pair Peru Balsam with Vanilla, Tonka, or Benzoin for candle or diffuser blends built around a sweet, cozy, amber profile rather than a bright or herbal one.
